Why Fix GMC Product Title Warnings

Why You’re Seeing This Merchant Center Warning

If you’re seeing product title warnings in Google Merchant Center (GMC), Google is telling you it isn’t fully confident in how your products are being described in the feed. But this isn’t just about ticking a compliance box.

Your product title is what the shopper reads first in the Shopping scroll. If it doesn’t clearly explain what the product is (and which version it is), shoppers hesitate, CTR drops, and performance softens - even when your campaigns are set up well. This is why title issues often point to a bigger need for consistent and well-managed product data.

Where to Find GMC Title Warnings

To locate this warning:

  1. Log in to your Google Merchant Center account

  2. Navigate to the Products section in the left-hand menu

  3. Click on the ‘Needs attention’ tab

  4. Click the issue to view impacted items and patterns

If warnings keep coming back across large SKU sets, it usually means Merchant Center needs ongoing attention, not one-off fixes.

Why Titles Get Flagged

Most title-related warnings come from one of these:

1) Titles aren’t maximised because the data isn’t there

This is the most common root cause. If your feed is missing clean attributes, your titles can’t be descriptive at scale.  Typical missing pieces:

  • size

  • gender/audience

  • normalised colour (shopper-friendly values, not internal codes)

  • physical item type (hoodie, trainer, midi dress — not generic labels)

  • sometimes material and one simple product feature (only when relevant)

2) Promotional language in the title

Keep titles factual. Remove phrases like:

  • “Free shipping”

  • “Hot deal”

  • “Best price”

  • “Limited time”

3) Spammy formatting

Avoid ALL CAPS, repeated punctuation, emojis, and decorative symbols. Keep formatting consistent.

4) The title doesn’t match the landing page

If the title includes details that aren’t clearly shown on the product page (or the variant can’t be reliably rendered), Google can flag it, and shoppers feel misled.

How to Fix Title Warnings (Quick Steps)

  1. Identify the pattern in Needs Attention (missing attributes, promo text, formatting, mismatch)

  2. Fix at source (recommended): your feed file, API, or SFTP

  3. Clean up your attributes so titles can be maximised consistently:

    • normalise colour values

    • standardise size formats

    • ensure item type is accurate and consistent per category

  4. Keep titles natural and readable (how people actually search)

  5. Resubmit the feed OR wait for the next fetch. Updates usually process within 24 - 48 hours
